The next-generation BMW X5 goes all in with the Neue Klasse and multiple powertrains

It looks like BMW is going all-in with the Neue Klasse platform and design language, breathing new life into the likes of the X3, the 3-Series, and most recently, the 7-Series. Joining the family is the all-new G65-generation X5, which not only gets the new platform and design, but also a myriad of drivetrains, just as we knew about it late last year.

For starters, the highlight is the BEV variant, the iX5 60, which utilizes the sixth-generation eDrive technology, the 800V architecture, and the Heart of Joy control systems, just like the other full-electric Neue Klasse vehicles. The dual-motor powertrain produces 578 horsepower and 805Nm of torque, mating a 141kWh battery (the largest in any production BMW) for a range of up to 845km.

Of course, the X5 series can come with the likes of air suspension, electronic active dampers, rear steering, roll stabilization, and other technologies that improve both ride and handling. The other powertrains include various electrified gasoline and diesel engines (X5 40 xDrive), plug-in hybrid models (X5 50e xDrive and X5 M60e xDrive), and the upcoming hydrogen fuel-cell model, with a range of up to 750km, and it will be produced by 2028.

The most polarizing aspect is the vehicle’s looks, with BMW going into the “controversial EV” route. It has the usual Neue Klasse look of slim illuminated kidneys and headlights that blend into the grille, but these LED headlight DRL signatures form the shape of two Xs (which are yellow on the M60e), alongside a fairly large black plastic panel above the air vents, and the M Sport variant features bits made out of carbon and aramid fiber.

Apart from that, it has sculpted, muscular fender flares,winglet-style door handles for a fairly clean side profile and aerodynamics, massive wheel sizes that go up to 23 inches, and the Neue Klasse rear end with slim LED taillights with two unique “bumps” in the design to differentiate it from the iX3, and an aggressive rear diffuser, with quad tailpepes for the M Sport variant.

Of course, the interior is your usual Neue Klasse affair, with the Panoramic iDrive system front and center—an odd four-spoke steering wheel, a large center display, a pillar-to-pillar display for your vital driving information, and a BMW Passenger display first seen in the 7-Series.

Various trim options are available, including white leather and metal trim. This also includes options like a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems for highway and city autonomous driving assistance.

The new X5 will have its market launch in late November 2026 with the ICE variants first, followed by the PHEV and BEV variants following in early 2027, all being assembled in the BMW Group Spartanburg plant in the US.
