Chinese cars are growing in popularity. The Geely Coolray is no exception. Geely literally hit our market with a bang when it came back in September last year. Despite many critics and skeptical people, its initial offering, the Coolray subcompact crossover SUV with its sub-1 million peso starting price won the hearts of many people.

When we checked it out, the Geely Coolray instantly surprised us. Surprises are usually good and it’s no different here. Here’s why we think the Geely Coolray is indeed a cool crossover.

Exterior Design

Chinese cars back in the day were not known for having good designs. Most of them were basically blatant copies of other mainstream and luxury cars. The story is completely different today. The Coolray is in no means like any other Chinese car of yesteryear. Saying that this car looks good is an understatement. It doesn’t look good, it looks great.

We also see some Volvo XC40 styling cues and that’s not bad at all since Geely owns Volvo afterall. 

Interior

The Geely Coolray’s interior is no longer like what we would expect from a Chinese car. Admittedly, it’s a lot better than most mainstream cars. Once you get a feel of it, you’ll feel that this is definitely on par with many of the luxury cars available in our market today. The red accents all around also make for a sporty interior on the Sport variant. No pun intended as well. 

The seats are very comfortable. Very well bolstered. The leather-wrapped steering wheel is also very nice to hold and is just the right size.

Tech features

When it comes to technology, the Geely Coolray is nowhere left behind. For just above Php 1-million, you can get the top-spec Coolray Sport. That already comes equipped with a 10.25-inch infotainment display, panoramic sunroof, interior mood lighting, leather interior, full LED headlights, push-button start with smart keyless entry, cruise control, and an electronic gear shifter.

In addition, the Sport variant is also equipped with a 360-degree around view monitor and automated self-parking. These features are usually absent at this price point.

Another nice touch is the completely digital instrument cluster which looks at home in this car. The display also changes depending on your driving mode. This is usually found in higher-end luxury cars like those from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. 

Really, what’s only missing are adaptive cruise control and rear AC vents.

Engine Specs

Sometimes cars can’t just win hearts with features. You also need a good engine and the Coolray has that as well. The 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged engine puts out more power and torque than most of its rivals. It comes with 177 horsepower and 255 Newton-meters of torque, paired with a wet dual clutch transmission. Get it on the road and you’ll definitely feel that the Coolray wants to get ahead of everyone else.

Affordable Price Tag

The Geely Coolray is very well-equipped. The features and specs basically match those of cars with price tags of at the very least Php 2.5-million and above. With the Coolray however, pricing starts at Php 978,000 and tops out at Php 1,198,000. Worth it di ba?
