After a couple of months of teasing and various sightings on Philippine roads, the Geely Emgrand is finally and officially available in the country, ready to compete in the very competitive B-segment sedan category with the likes of the Toyota Vios, Honda City, and Nissan Almera among others.

First introduced in China back in August last year, the Geely Emgrand is built on the same B-segment Modular Architecture (BMA) platform as the Geely Coolray which is very popular in the country. It is also the first sedan in Geely’s Philippine lineup which was composed of three crossovers.

The Geely Emgrand can be had in three variants, starting with the base S, the mid-level Comfort, and the top-spec Premium. For now, only the Comfort and Premium are available. With such a competitive set of rivals, the Geely Emgrand has a lot to fulfill. Its exterior design is very European, inspired by the Preface sedan and Xingyue L SUV, wearing the brand’s latest design language. Also, despite competing in the subcompact sedan segment, the Emgrand is actually quite large at 4,638 mm long, 1,820 mm wide, and 1,460 mm tall. For comparison, the Toyota Vios is 4,420 mm long, 1,730 mm wide, and 1,475 mm tall. It’s actually just 36 mm shorter and 18 mm wider than a Honda Civic which is one segment higher.

Standard exterior equipment starting from the base Emgrand S are projector-type halogen headlights, LED daytime running lights, 15-inch steel wheels with hubcaps. Going for the mid-level Emgrand Comfort and top-spec Premium adds full LED headlights with auto on/off, 17-inch alloy wheels, 4-wheel disc brakes, power folding side mirrors, and hand-free trunk release function.

Inside, the Geely Emgrand gets a visibly more modern and more premium-looking minimalistic cabin compared to its rivals. Standard interior equipment on the base S are a black interior, fabric seats, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 2-speaker audio system, analog gauges with 3.5-inch multi-information display, electronic climate control with intelligent interactive system, and rear airconditioning vents.

Moving up to the Comfort gives you a 4-speaker audio system, 6-way manual adjustment for the driver’s seat, and an electronic parking brake with auto-hold function. Finally, going for the Emgrand Premium adds a two-tone white and blue interior color scheme, leatherette and suede combination seat material, 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 6-speaker audio system, and a power sunroof.

Under the hood, the Emgrand is the first Geely model made available locally without a turbocharged powertrain. It is powered by a naturally-aspirated 1.5-liter inline 4-cylinder D-CVVT petrol engine that produces 102 horsepower and 142 Nm of torque, paired to a 5-speed manual transmission on the base S variant, or a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with eight (8) simulated gears on the Comfort and Premium.

In terms of safety, all Geely Emgrand variants get dual front airbags, anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, traction control, stability control, tire pressure monitoring system, and ISOFIX tethers. The Comfort adds hill start assist, reverse camera, and rear parking sensors. The Premium on the other hand adds front side airbags and side curtain airbags.

The Geely Emgrand is available in six (6) different color choices which are Proud Teal, Dark Blue, Gold, Gray, Red, and White. Pricing is very competitive and starts at Php 798,000 for the Comfort, and tops-out at Php 908,000 for the Premium. Despite being included in the model’s spec-sheet, no pricing has been announced for the S variant which will be made available some time this year.

The 2022 Geely Emgrand is now available in all Geely dealerships nationwide. With all that information in mind, will you consider choosing the Emgrand over its more established rivals?
