The latest in Philippine motoring

Japan just got a newer Nissan Kicks e-Power that we won’t be getting

As we await the launch of the new Nissan Kicks e-Power that was first shown off to the world at the 2026 Bangkok International Motor Show and more recently, at the 2026 Philippine International Motor Show, we all know that this wasn’t the latest generation of the Kicks because North America gets the P16-generation model, albeit without the e-Power powertrain, which was launched back in 2024.

As for why the Philippines wasn’t supposed to get it, to quote Senior Vice President for Global Design at Nissan, Alfonso Albaisa, the model we are meant to get is the one for developing markets, and that it would be too expensive, especially since it was not supposed to get the e-Power powertrain, but somehow, Japan got it.

And this isn’t the same e-Power that we have in our current Kicks, but rather, the third-generation e-Power powertrain that Japan will be seeing for the first time, making it a bit of a big deal.

This now uses a 1.4-liter, three-cylinder direct-injection gas engine (the HR14DDe) meant to act as a generator and produces 98 horsepower and 115Nm of torque. The new 5-in-1 powertrain unit, the YM52, is more compact and efficient, making 143 horsepower and 315Nm of torque.

You have the option to drop in another electric motor at the back (MM48), adding another 68 horsepower and 140Nm, and giving the car the e-4orce electronic all-wheel drive with improved traction and handling capabilities. Nissan’s WLTC-rated fuel economy figures range from 20.1km/L to 25.7km/L depending on trim level and powertrain.

As for the rest of the car, it’s identical to the one we first saw in North America, complete with the new LED light signature, the larger body dimensions with optional funky three-spoke wheels, a Resonance Blue color exclusive to Japan, dual 12.3-inch infotainment screens running the NissanConnect interface with Google built-in, a panoramic sunroof, and more.

While this all-new Kicks e-Power would obviously be more expensive due to all the new added tech, powertrain, and body size, do you think this would make sense for Nissan Philippines to introduce this, or to continue with the current generation, Kait-based Kicks e-Power update that’s more affordable?
