New car sales recover in May 2026, electrified vehicles slightly drop

The local automotive industry is seeing a bit of recovery in terms of sales, based on the latest report from the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines Inc. (CAMPI) and Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA).

Member brands of the two organizations recorded a combined sales figure of 33,532 units throughout the month of May 2026, growing by 24% compared to the previous month, and bringing this year’s vehicle sales figure to 167,324 units from January to May 2026.

The three top-selling brands are unchanged for this month, with Toyota Motor Philippines remaining at first place with 17,076 units sold, followed by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines in second with 5,415 units sold, and Suzuki Philippines in third with 1,441 units sold. Ford Philippines is in fourth place with 1,260 units sold, and Isuzu Philippines is in fifth with 930 units sold.

While overall sales have grown, electrified vehicle sales saw a slight drop, attributed to supply constraints due to skyrocketing increased demand. Total electrified vehicle sales for May 2026 is at 6,027 units, or 4.3% less than the previous month. Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales grew by a whopping 86.6% with 1,843 units sold, while plug-in hybrids (PHEV) sales saw 1,274 units sold, a 5.6% increase. Hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) saw a 29.3% drop with 2,910 units sold compared to the previous month’s 4,114 units.

Despite the slight drop this month, electrified vehicle sales have already more than doubled from January to May 2026 with a total of 24,356 units sold, compared to January to May 2025 where only 10,431 units were sold.

BEV sales are still led by Tesla Philippines with 829 units sold, followed by VinFast Philippines in second with 561 units sold, and Omoda and Jaecoo Philippines in third with 274 units sold. For PHEVs, Jetour Auto Philippines tops the list with 463 units sold, and for HEVs, Toyota Motor Philippines with 1,769 units sold.

We continue to observe expanding demand for various types of Electrified Vehicles (xEVs), with cumulative Jan – May sales already doubling vs. last year. xEVs now account for 18% of the total market, up by nine points from the previous year. The accelerating growth trend is only held back by availability constraints resulting from the sudden surge in demand,” said CAMPI President Jing Atienza.
