The Mitsubishi Pajero will be returning this year, and it’s based on the Triton

After several teasers by Mitsubishi, it has finally revealed that the legendary Pajero will be making its return later this year (in Autumn for Japan). It has been five years since the SUV was discontinued in global markets, so this is big news as its flagship model will be making a comeback.
According to Mitsubishi, the all-new Pajero will be based on the ladder frame chassis found within the Triton, but with model-specific developments for the cabin, front, and rear suspension, unlike the previous generations that rode on bespoke ladder frame and unibody platforms later on in its life. Mitsubishi promises that this will not only deliver outstanding off-road capabilities, but also a refined and comfortable ride.

This could mean that we could be seeing the 2.4-liter, twin-turbo 4N16 diesel motor be used here, mated to the Super Select 4WD II system, unless Mitsubishi decides to pull a curve ball and introduce a brand-new or Nissan-sourced V6 engine, since this is the flagship model, after all.
More interestingly, this also implies that the Montero Sport SUV could have been merged into the Pajero, as that shares the platform with its pickup truck sibling. All that we know is that it’s an exciting time to be an SUV fan, as this will join the likes of the Toyota Land Cruiser 300, Land Cruiser Prado, and Y63 Nissan Patrol in this new decade.
