The Nissan Xterra returns as a frame-based V6 hybrid SUV for North America

While many automakers are placing their priorities on new crossover SUVs, there’s no doubt that body-on-frame SUVs still hold a special place in the market. This is why Nissan is set to revive the Xterra nameplate which it teased at its recent Vision event at its global headquarters in Yokohama, Japan.
Not to be confused with the X-Terra from the Middle Eastern market, the Xterra was originally a compact SUV that was built on the D22 and D40 Frontier’s platform, until it was eventually discontinued. And with frame-based SUVs going back in style in North America, it’s the right time for Nissan to reintroduce this nameplate.

Thanks to its recent teaser, we have an idea of how the all-new Xterra will look, at least in front. It will get a very rugged front fascia with squared-out headlights that are possibly separated from its daytime running lights, and the Nissan name is also spelled out in typical rugged off-road SUV fashion.
Three amber lights on the front grille show its inspiration from the Nissan Hardbody (D21), and also hint at its size. In the US, the government mandates that any vehicle that measures at over 80 inches (2,032mm) wide must be equipped with amber markers on the front grille to signify a larger than usual vehicle. We don’t know if Nissan just added those for style, but it’s still something.
Nissan has also hinted at what to expect when it comes to performance. Instead of going fully electric like many other revived model nameplates, the Xterra will have a V6 hybrid powertrain, also hinting that it will compete directly with the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (Prado for the Philippines) and Toyota 4Runner.
Body-on-frame SUVs are extremely popular in the Philippines, but chances of the Xterra coming here are low as it isn’t designed for us. Given the chance though, would you like to see the Xterra be introduced in our market as a more premium alternative to the Terra?
