What’s new in the 2020 Mitsubishi Xpander?

Everything you need to know about the refreshed Mitsubishi Xpander.

Together with the arrival of the new 2020 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross, Mitsubishi’s Suzuki XL-7, Honda BR-V, and Toyota Rush fighter, Mitsubishi Philippines also introduced the updated Xpander.

Unfortunately the anticipated launch of the Xpander Cross and refreshed Xpander lineup was cancelled due to COVID-19. Just a week or two later, the entire Luzon island was placed on ‘enhanced community quarantine’ so not everyone can see what’s all new. While the powertrain has remained the same, there are a handful of external changes in the new Xpander.

Here’s everything you need to know about the refreshed 2020 Mitsubishi Xpander.

The first thing that’s new with the refreshed 2020 Mitsubishi Xpander is the line-up. The Xpander Cross replaces the previously top-spec GLS Sport variant while other variants are this GLS, GLX Plus, and GLX. For those who still want the GLS Sport variant, you can still avail of 2019-model units from Mitsubishi Motors Angeles City.

Exterior Changes

The most obvious change in the updated Xpander is in the front fascia. Front and center is the updated version of Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield Grille which makes the Xpander look sportier and more rugged than it was. The GLS variant gets it in chrome while the GLX Plus and manual both get in a piano-black finish.

The third change is still in the front fascia, while the LED park lights remain the same, the headlights of the Xpander have been upgraded to multi-reflector LED units from halogens. This will definitely help in lighting up the roads at night especially in dark places. This also modernizes the appearance of the Xpander, making it look more like the Montero Sport SUV and Strada pick-up truck.

The next one is also quite obvious if you’re familiar with the Xpander, the 16-inch two-tone alloy wheels have also been updated with a new sportier design. Tire size remains the same though at 2-0-5 55 R16.

A new Graphite Gray exterior color is now available in the Xpander Cross, GLS, and GLX Plus variants. It’s the same one that you can get on the 2020 Montero Sport and Strada and replaces Titanium Gray in the color options. I personally love the Titanium Gray color option but this Graphite Gray is so much nicer.

Among the exterior changes in the refreshed Xpander, this is the last one. The antenna has been replaced by a more modern shark fin antenna.

Interior Changes

Now inside, not much has changed. Keen-eyed observers and those very familiar with the Xpander will definitely notice the new seat pattern which looks a bit sportier than on the 2017 to 2019 Xpanders.

This one will also only be noticed by very keen observers. The silver textured pattern on the door panels and dashboard have been replaced by a new one which looks sportier as well. Material is also different as it gets a glossy finish now.

Next, the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display has been slightly updated. It is now faster and easier to use than before. It also looks more modern with better graphics. I do wish that Mitsubishi could have at least added a volume knob as touch sensitive controls are not exactly very easy to use.

For pricing, the updated Xpander starts at Php 1,008,000 for the base GLX with a manual transmission, Php 1,088,000 for the GLX Plus automatic, and 1,128,000 for the GLS. The top-spec Xpander Cross goes for Php 1,255,000.
