Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) has been on a launch streak in the past few months. They have no plans of slowing down, this time with the introduction of the 3rd generation of the Toyota Avanza 7-seater compact family MPV. This comes just a little over a month after TMP introduced its entry into the subcompact crossover SUV segment in the form of the Raize.

The 2022 Toyota Avanza was first revealed for the Indonesian market back in November last year and is based on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform which also underpins other Daihatsu-based Toyota models such as the Raize.

The all-new Toyota Avanza can be had in four different variants, spread across three grades. This starts with the base 1.3 J M/T, then the 1.3 E M/T, 1.3 E A/T, and finally the top-spec 1.5 G A/T. There is no Veloz variant in the Avanza line-up as of now.

So what’s new? Obviously the 2022 Toyota Avanza gets a completely redesigned exterior with its more upscale look and design elements that put it in line with Toyota’s latest models such as the Raize, recently updated RAV4, and others.

Standard exterior equipment, starting with the 1.3 J M/T variant are LED headlights, LED combination taillights, rear spoiler, and 15-inch steel wheels. Upgrading to the 1.3 E variants add front fog lights, power-adjustable and power-folding side mirrors with LED turn indicators, 15-inch alloy wheels, and fin-type antenna. Finally, the 1.5 G gets 16-inch alloy wheels.

Inside, the 2022 Toyota Avanza is a far-cry from the outgoing version. The dashboard design is now more modern and also more in-line with other Toyota models. It even has what Toyota calls “Long Sofa Mode” where you can fold all the seats flat to create a lounge on wheels.

Standard across the range starting with the base 1.3 J M/T are two-tone black and brown fabric seats, optitron analog gauges, tilt-adjustable steering wheel, power windows, digital climate control, and a 6.75-inch touchscreen audio system. The 1.3 E variants add chrome inside door handles, telescopic adjustment for the steering wheel, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Lastly, the 1.5 G gets push button start.

Under the hood of the 2022 Toyota Avanza are two engine options. The first option is a 1.3-liter Inline 4-cylinder engine that produces 98 horsepower and 122 Nm of torque, paired to either a 5-speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT), depending on the variant. The second option is a 1.5-liter Inline-4 that produces 122 horsepower and 138 Nm of torque, exclusively paired to a CVT.

With the shift in platform, the 2022 Toyota Avanza now rides on a unibody chassis as opposed to the previous body-on-frame chassis which is the same as seen on pick-up trucks. This also means its drivetrain has also shifted into a front-wheel drive layout instead of the previous gen’s rear-wheel drive setup.

Safety is also definitely upgraded with the 2022 Toyota Avanza. Standard on all variants are dual front airbags, anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, vehicle stability control, and hill start assist. The 1.3 E variants add rear parking sensors and a reverse camera while the 1.5 G gets additional side and side curtain airbags, plus segment-first blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.

Available exterior colors for the 2022 Toyota Avanza are White (1.3 J M/T only), Dark Red Mica Metallic, Black Metallic, Silver Metallic, and Greenish Gun Metal Mica Metallic.
