24 Hours of Le Mans: Ferrari wins for the 3rd consecutive time

There’s no stopping Ferrari which just bagged its third consecutive win at this weekend’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious endurance races.

This is definitely a historic moment for the Italian manufacturer as this is the first time it achieved such a win since the 1960s when it won six times in a row from 1960 to 1965.

With this three-peat, the Prancing Horse will be able to keep its winners’ trophy which is only granted to those who secure victory in three consecutive editions.

The winning #83 Ferrari 499P fielded by customer team AF Corse was driven by Yifei Ye, the first Chinese driver to win at Le Mans, alongside Phil Hanson and former F1 driver Robert Kubica.

The 499P has so far won every race contested at the Circuit de La Sarthe, previously taking the crown at the last two races (#51 for 2023 and #50 for 2024, both under Ferrari AF Corse) with the latest marking its seventh win since its competitive debut in 2023, with its electrified twin-turbo V6 engine shared from the Ferrari 296 and 296 GT3 cars.

Ferrari has taken four wins in this season of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC): Lusail (Qatar), Imola (Italy), Spa (Belgium) and Le Mans (France). It currently leads the world manufacturers’ championship standings with 202 points, 111 more than Toyota Gazoo Racing in second, and 122 more than Porsche.

For those curious about the top 10 contenders, the #83 AF Corse Ferrari 499P takes P1, while the #6 Porsche Penske 963 finished in P2. P3 and P4 are the #51 and #50 Ferrari AF Corse 499Ps respectively, followed by the #12 Cadillac Hertz Team Jota V-Series.R in P5.

The #7 Toyota GR010 takes P6, with the #5 Porsche Penske 963 in P7, the #38 Cadillac Hertz Team Jota in P8, the #4 Porsche Penske 963 in P9, and the #35 Alpine A424 in P10.

The other class winners include the #43 Inter Europol Competition Oreca 07 for LMP2, and the #92 Manthey 1st Phorm Porsche 911 GT3 R for the LMGT3 class.

This year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans was unusually calm compared to other seasons with fewer significant crashes and only one safety-car period. With Ferrari’s latest win, it now has 12 wins in the 101-year-old French endurance race series.
