How do you make a car bulletproof?

4 min read
Let’s talk about the process of bulletproofing.

Safety is one of, if not the most important thing for almost everyone. There are a select number of people who need bulletproof cars as a personal safety measure, especially for those with a high-profile status. Extremely rich businessmen? Politicians? But did you ever wonder how bulletproof cars are made? Chances are you have seen a bulletproof car and you probably didn’t know it was.

Considering how usually expensive it is and the amount of safety you get, bulletproofing actually involves just a few processes. But when you see the actual process, it does not exactly look completely simple.

Hi-Protect Armored Cars Corporation has been in the business since 2015. Despite being a young player in the armoring industry, its management and staff have experience that can be equated to over 70 years. We were able to check out and talk about the process and we want to share it with you.

The Process

There are about 6 or 7 processes, it depends on if you think two processes can be combined into one or should be separate.

Anyway, the very first step in the process is stripping down the car. This will allow the armoring process to begin. In this stage, the car is stripped off basically everything like doors, interior panels, everything.

After stripping down the vehicle to its frame, we get to the most important part step in this process of bulletproofing. Ballistic steel is welded into the frame of the vehicle. Take note that every single part of the frame or body gets covered by this. It is this core material that mainly gives 360-degree protection to the vehicle and its occupants.

Once the welding of ballistic steel is completed, the inside of the car will be painted with primer to fight against rust and corrosion.

The next step is the part where you can say, the management and staff here should be capable of handling car-assembly lines for the automotive manufacturers. This step is the re-assembly of the vehicle. Each and every component will be placed as it was in the factory. This step is actually the most difficult as each piece must be reinstalled in its original place and with newer cars having more tech and comfort features, those wires will definitely make you scream.

Part of the reassembly of the vehicle includes the installation of run-flat tires which will allow, as with its name, the car to run with flat tires. This is important as if you have normal tires and they get punctured, there will be no way of escape if needed.

Lastly, the brakes of the vehicle are also upgraded as the added weight will require more stopping power.

In total, the entire process from stripping down to re-assembly will take around 60 to 75 days.

Finished Product

Seeing the actual finished product, you won’t find any sign at all that it’s a bulletproof car. Take for example this Nissan Patrol. It looks like every other Patrol on the road doesn’t it?

It is when you open the doors and the trunk that you’ll notice the differences between this bulletproof Nissan Patrol and a regular one. The obvious giveaways are the thicker windows and the secondary side-hinged trunk door.

The front windows can still be rolled down a little bit, just enough to be able to pay toll fees or maybe parking fees at the mall parking lot. The stitched leather just above the door opening definitely gives a more stock look, and also maybe a touch more luxurious?

The side-opening bulletproof door in the trunk still gives you a very wide opening and the door itself will not really reduce what cargo space you have.

Under the hood, the battery and E.C.U. are all covered to ensure that the engine won’t stop running.

Can all cars be armored?

You may be wondering, since they are so common, is bulletproofing limited to large SUVs like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol? The answer is a no. Hi-Protect does this on different sizes of vehicles. When we were there we saw some Toyota Fortuners, a modern 70-series Toyota Land Cruiser, a Mitsubishi Montero Sport, and they also have experience with a Toyota Camry and Hilux for sedans and pick-ups respectively.
