The BYD Dolphin G gets a Super DM-i powertrain with range of more than 1,000km

In the B-segment (or subcompact in the rest of the world), BYD Philippines’ offerings include the upcoming Atto 2 and the somewhat forgotten Dolphin, which hasn’t received an update ever since it was introduced to the market back in 2021

Other countries, especially China, have given the electric hatchback several updates, but we think the European-oriented Dolphin G DM-i is worth considering.

One of the most impressive aspects of the Dolphin G DM-i is its new Super DM-i plug-in hybrid powertrain that mates a gasoline engine to a front-mounted electric motor and a battery of unspecified capacity. More details of its powertrain will be revealed towards its global launch in June, but BYD says that one full tank of gas and a full charge can get you more than 1,000km.

The looks of the Dolphin G DM-i seem to have grown up a bit more, with a sportier and sleeker appearance compared to the outgoing Dolphin, complete with a front grille with active grille shutters to cool the engine, plus a bright orange finish. Finally, it measures 4,160mm long and 1,825mm wide, similar to the current Dolphin.

The vehicle’s full details will break cover this June 2026, but it will most likely head on over to European markets first before heading to the rest of the world. Would you rather have this Super DM-i-powered Dolphin versus a newer, full-electric Dolphin?
