The ID. Era 5S is a new plug-in hybrid Volkswagen sedan

Remember the Volkswagen Passat? It sat on top of the brand’s sedan lineup back when Volkswagen Philippines was starting out under the management of the then AC Motors (now BYD and Kia distributor ACMobility), until they changed their local direction and removed it from the lineup.

Now, with the German automaker having exited our market entirely, we can’t help but think that things would have been a bit different with the current products that they could source from China compared to before their exit. One example of what may be a good offering is the new Volkswagen ID. Era 5S.

This plug-in hybrid (PHEV) midsize sedan was launched at the recent 2026 Chengdu Motor Show, and is the newest PHEV sedan under the brand’s portfolio, and the first of its kind under the ID. Era sub-brand. It’s also slightly larger than the last Passat offered here in our market, measuring at 4,836mm long, 1,880mm wide, and 1,505mm tall, riding on a 2,766mm wheelbase.

It still looks part of the Volkswagen family in terms of design despite its more futuristic cues. In front it gets split headlights with lightbars that merge at the illuminated Volkswagen emblem, with the actual headlight bulbs on the bumper. Horizontal taillights also merge at an illuminated emblem at the rear, and the side features pull-up door handles and two-tone alloy wheels.

Inside, it features a stacked dual-layer dashboard design with an overall minimalist look. Central is a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar, and Carlink connectivity, along with a six-speaker audio system. It’s also equipped with an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster behind a two-spoke steering wheel.

Being a PHEV, the Volkswagen ID. Era 5S is powered by a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine that makes 109 horsepower and 126Nm of torque, and a front-mounted electric motor making 177 horsepower and 270Nm. With a 19.1kWh LFP battery, it should be able to provide up to 120km of full electric range, or up to 2,000km combined, based on the CLTC cycle. 

It also supports both AC and DC charging, with the latter capable of bringing the battery from 30 to 80% charge in 15 minutes. Volkswagen also says that it should be able to achieve a fuel consumption figure of over 23km/l with a depleted battery.

One very interesting thing worth mentioning is the Volkswagen ID. Era 5S’ price. In China, it starts at just RMB 89,900. That’s approximately Php 825,000, making it extremely affordable for a midsize sedan with an electrified powertrain.

As you can already probably tell, the likelihood of this coming to our market in the near future is very low with no local presence from Volkswagen. Unless a gray market importer brings units in, we can’t get our hands on the ID. Era 5S. But then again, we wonder if things would have been a bit different for the German automaker here in the Philippines if they offered what’s in the Chinese market right now to us.
