The MG RX9 could be on its way to PH to fight BYD Tang DM-i, diesel SUVs

At the 2025 Manila International Auto Show (MIAS) last year, MG Motor Philippines previewed a new seven-seater turbodiesel midsize SUV called the D90 Rakan. More than a year later, it still hasn’t launched in our market, and that could mean two things.

There’s the possibility that the Sino-British automaker has simply delayed the D90 Rakan’s introduction for reasons we don’t know, then there’s the possibility that they’re going a different direction instead. For the latter, that could be with the MG RX9.

The three-row midsize plug-in hybrid crossover has been added to the Department of Energy’s List of Recognized EVs, hinting at a possible local launch in the coming months. If it will come, it will compete directly with the BYD Tang DM-i, and even mainstream midsize turbodiesel SUVs such as the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest.

We even got to take a look at its possible specifications for our market, showing that it will come in a single variant. It measures at 4,983mm long, 1,967mm wide, and 1,786mm tall, and rides on a 2,915mm wheelbase.

As mentioned, the MG RX9 is a plug-in hybrid. Its powertrain will be composed of a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine making 143 horsepower and 230Nm of torque, and an electric motor that produces 239 horsepower and 390Nm. Combined power output is a generous 328 horsepower, sent to the front wheels via a dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT).

The motors are paired to a 24.7kWh LFP battery that’s capable of up to 100km of all-electric range on a full charge. Combined gasoline and electric range were not mentioned, but the battery can be replenished through Type 2 AC charging.

Design-wise, the MG RX9 wears a sharp and aggressive exterior. The headlights are positioned high and the turn signals extend to the sides of the very wide front grille, while the rear features U-shaped wraparound taillights. Its interior takes a more elegant approach with faux wood accents, and could also feature a pair of captain seats on the second row.

Features the MG RX9 could get once launched in the Philippines include a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, a 12-speaker Bose sound system; heating, ventilation, and massage functions for the front seats; and tri-zone climate control. It will also come equipped with MG Pilot, the brand’s suite of advanced driver-assist systems (ADAS), along with other common active and passive safety features.

With the recent surge in fuel prices, especially diesel fuel, many buyers have made the switch to PHEVs and battery electric vehicles. With the MG RX9 potentially competing in the competitive midsize SUV segment, MG Motor Philippines will surely have one interesting offering if they are indeed bringing it in.
