The small BYD Dolphin G DM-i can drive up to 1,040km

Last month, BYD teased its latest iteration of the Dolphin G plug-in hybrid hatchback with a handful of initial specs and an almost full reveal of its exterior and all, plus a combined range figure of more than 1,000km.

Now, the Dolphin G’s debut date has lapsed, and BYD has unveiled the full details for its smallest plug-in hybrid model.

We start off with its powertrain: the familiar DM-i plug-in hybrid drivetrain with a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 95 horsepower and 120Nm of torque alone, and the electric motor makes 163 horsepower and 210Nm of torque for a total combined power output of either 176 horsepower for the lower-end Active trim, or 212 horsepower for the higher-end Boost/Comfort/Sport trims.

These two variants are also different thanks to the BYD Blade batteries that they have, mating a 42L fuel tank to either a 7.42kWh or 18.3kWh battery.

The shorter range variant can do up to 40km on pure electric power and a combined range of 1,020km, and only has 3.3kW AC charging. The longer range variant can do up to 65km on pure electric power, or up to 1,040km combined. It also supports faster 6.6kW AC charging, or 39kW DC charging, filling up a battery from 10 to 80% in 26 minutes, and also supports 3.3kW V2L functionality.

As for other specifications, the Dolphin G DM-i rides either on 16 or 18-inch alloy wheels, has full LED lighting in the updated Ocean series design language, and is available in four colors, with Orange Sunset set as the hero color.

The interior also comes with a lot of available upholstery options, from synthetic leather to a two-tone motorsports-inspired suede finish, a lot of space thanks to the 2,610mm wheelbase, and a generous amount of storage with 425L of cargo space that’s expandable up to 1,225L with the rear seats folded down.

Tech includes a new 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and either a 10.1-inch or 12.8-inch infotainment screen with Google app integration, alongside niceties like a 15W wireless charger, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, multi-color ambient lighting, a widescreen heads-up display, automatic climate control, a panoramic glass roof with retractable sunshade, an eight-speaker sound system, and a complete suite of advanced driver assistance systems, including a 360-degree camera.

BYD is set to offer this in Europe later this year, and there’s no other confirmed markets for the model (just yet), so fingers are crossed that we see this in the Philippines soon.
